Because of the population’s increasing awareness of health and the rising life expectancy, basic healthcare and maintenance should be given special attention. In 2006 alone the region Aachen achieved a turnover of approximately 3.8 billions euros in the healthcare industry. Unlike other branches the healthcare market is growing constantly and therefore has to meet higher requirements every year- especially in the area of care and maintenance.

Around 72,000 people are currently employed in the regions healthcare industry. Thereby patient care and the care for people in need hold a special position both stationary and ambulatory. To ensure a comprehensive care and maintenance the Regio Aachen Association and other regional protagonists from Aachen are involved in its planning and supporting.

Supply network:
With more than 30 hospitals and clinics, the region has a communal high-quality supply network. The university hospital of the RWTH Aachen ranks medically and economically among the best university hospitals, in the fields of training and further training, research and education. Its more than 6,000 employees annually treat 45,000 patients stationary and 12,000 patients ambulatory.

Healthcare facilities:
More than 100 stationary and ambulatory healthcare facilities are facing new challenges due to restructuring in the health sector and an increasing economisation of care. Nevertheless because of the dynamical market development they have good opportunities to becoming a central driver for jobs in the region.

Prevention:
Concerning extended life expectance, work loads but also new medically capabilities, prevention gains increasingly importance. With partners from Netherlands and Belgium excellent possibilities to strengthen and develop the health industry exist.
